The cultivation of social consciousness is very important. Man cannot live in isolation like a drop of oil in water. He is a product of society. He has to live in it, grow with it and work for it. One must join others in common tasks and contribute one's strength and skill to the common pool. A single thin string cannot bind even an ant, but hundreds of them twisted into a rope can hold back an elephant. This is the effect of united effort. It is a desirable trait to work for a common cause with others in cooperation. Sri Sathya Sai Baba |

From my earliest years, I have been concerned about providing three primary requisites for our people. Free education, free medical aid, and free basic amenities like drinking water. Education is for the head; medical care is for the heart; and pure water is for the body. These three cover the main requirements of life. To provide these three gives one the greatest gratification. Sri Sathya Sai Baba |

Each religion forgets that God is all forms and all names, all attributes and all assertions. The religion of humanity is the sum and substance of all these partial faiths; for there is only one religion and that is the religion of Love. Sri Sathya Sai Baba |

My task is not merely to cure, console and remove individual misery. But there is something far more important. The important task of the mango tree is to produce the mango fruit. The leaves, the branches and the trunk of the tree are useful in their own way, no doubt, but the main aim of the mango tree is to produce the mango fruit. So too, the removal of misery and distress are all incidental to my mission. My main task is re-establishment of Vedas and Shastras in the hearts of all people. Sri Sathya Sai Baba |

Academic knowledge alone is of no great value. It may help one to earn a livelihood. But, education should go beyond the preparation for earning a living. It should prepare one for the challenges of life morally and spiritually. It is because human values are absent in "educated" persons that we find them steeped in anxiety and worry. Sri Sathya Sai Baba |

Education is for life not for mere living. There are millions of people who are not educated in this country (India) and who are still living a good life. Education should enable you to be an ideal and develop into an ideal example. Education should enable you to distinguish between right and wrong. It should promote humility in you, should enable you to become more humble than an uneducated person. It should enable to serve your parents and your country and your service should become a selfless service. Sri Sathya Sai Baba |

Practise silence, for the voice of God can be heard in the region of your heart only when the tongue and the inner storm are stilled, and the waves (of the mind) are calmed. There will be no temptation for others to shout when you talk to them in whispers. Set the level of the tone yourself: as low as possible, as high as necessary to reach the outermost boundary of the circle you are addressing. Conserve sound, since it is the treasure of the element ether (Akasa), an emanation from God Himself. Reason can prevail only when the arguments are advanced without the whipping up of sound. Silence is the speech of the spiritual seeker. Soft speech is the expression of genuine love. Hate screeches; fear squeals; conceit trumpets; but love sings lullabies, it soothes, it applies balm. Practise the vocabulary of love; unlearn the language of hate and contempt. Sri Sathya Sai Baba |

I have a "Task": To foster all mankind and ensure for all of them lives full of ananda (bliss). I have a "Vow": To lead all who stray away from the straight path again into goodness and save them. I am attached to a "work" that I love: To remove the sufferings of the poor and grant them what they lack. I have a "reason to be proud", for I rescue all who worship and adore me, aright. I have my definition of the "devotion" I expect: Those devoted to me have to treat joy and grief, gain and loss, with equal fortitude. This means that I will never give up those who attach themselves to me. Sri Sathya Sai Baba |

The manner and mien of the physician are more effective in drawing out the latent sources of strength in the patient, than the most powerful drug. A prayerful atmosphere of humility and veneration will go a long way to help the cure. Sri Sathya Sai Baba, 1980 |
