The Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region's Silent Retreat (A Weekend of Silence) was started in the late eighties. The retreat was designed for people looking to practice Baba's recommended spiritual practices such as silence, meditation, and prayer for longer intervals of time in a peaceful, quiet environment. The participants are provided with an opportunity to turn inward during long spells of silence amidst devotional singing, chanting, and silent-service tasks. They are encouraged to refrain from speech or other casual communication throughout the day at all times.

The prime and initial organizers were Sisters Mimi Goldberg, Suman Govindan, and Ann Sohani. They proposed the retreat to the then US president Jack Hislop. He attended the first retreat and was the speaker for the retreat and spent much of the time answering questions about sadhana. The first retreat was held at a retreat house out in Long Island, New York. Since 1990, the retreat has been held at St. Mary's Villa in Sloatsburg, New York.

The weekend of Silence emphasizes internal sadhana and augments our other annual regional retreat, where the principal focus is more on spiritual talks, discussions, and workshops, besides the supporting activities in all the three wings. The Silent Retreat is meant to inspire us to go within to meet Baba in Silence in order to advance along the spiritual path that He has set out for all of His devotees.
